Girish Chatterjee

  Pandit Girish Chatterjee was born in Kolkata, in a family that kept the Indian Classical tradition alive for three generations. Pt. Chatterjee started learning music at the tender age of 4, under the guidance of his first gurus, late Pt. Tarakeshwar Chattopadhyay and Smt. Dipali Chattopadhyay, who are also his parents. Pt. Chatterjee was awarded a prestigious scholarship and got accepted as a research scholar in the distinguished Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) of Kolkata at the age of 9. In SRA, he went on studying and researching the many facets of Indian Classical music for the next 10 years. During his tenure in SRA, he was trained by two legendary vocalists of India, Pt. A.T. Kanan and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi as well as other eminent classical vocalists/musicians such as Pt. V.G. Jog and Hirabai Barodekar, among others.   He has shared the stage with Pt. Bhimsen Joshi in many programs including Dover Lane Music Conference. “Pandit Chatterjee was a 2011 Filmfare Award nominee for the song “Mora Saiyan” featured in the movie “MIRCH”. The song was written, composed and sung by him.” Pandit Chatterjee has a long standing relationship with Bollywood. His late gurus Pt. A. Kanan and Pt. V.G. Jog introduced him to this world famous movie industry. In Bollywood, he has worked with an array of legendary music directors and lyricists such as Rabindra Jain, R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, Naushadji, Indeevar, Kaifi Azmi, and Javed Aktar, among others. Pt. Chatterjee was a 2011 Filmfare Award nominee for the song “Mora Saiyan” featured in the movie “MIRCH”. The song was written, composed and sung by him.   Pt. Chatterjee shares his time between India and the United States where he is currently working on two international albums. Through his musical organizations located in Kolkata and Los Angeles, Pt. Chatterjee dedicates his knowledge and talent in helping destitute children so that they can have an opportunity to learn music and become talented performers.
